Basic grass species and their properties

Ryegrass -  Lolium perenne

• Ryegrass is very sturdy and can bear heavy load. It germinates quickly after sowing. It is less tolerant to drought and needs more intensive maintenance. With proper care, ryegrass, mixed with other species, will form a high quality durable turf.

Smooth meadow grass -  Poa pratensis

• Its strengths include high tolerance to treading, cold and frost, and perfect appearance after mowing. However, its germination time is quite long, taking 3 – 4 weeks depending on conditions. In combination with ryegrass, the smooth meadow grass is a good choice for heavy-duty intensely used turfs.

Red fescue - Festuca rubra

• The fescue is a variable plant with several sub-species, forming tufts, short or long rhizomes. The combination of all these three types ensures a high quality lawn. Some of its strengths include fine leaf structure, high density and tolerance to shade. Its weaknesses are somewhat slower regeneration and limited resistance to load. Its characteristics make it perfect for ornamental lawns.
